TOPIK I vs TOPIK II: Format, Timing and Which One to Take
TOPIK is two different tests. TOPIK I covers beginner Korean (levels 1–2). TOPIK II covers intermediate and advanced Korean (levels 3–6) and adds a writing section.

Test day timing (Korea, paper test)
- TOPIK I: one period, listening then reading with no break between them.
- TOPIK II: period 1 is listening + writing (110 min); period 2 is reading (70 min).
- They are separate registrations, so you can sit both on the same day.
Internet-based TOPIK (IBT)
The IBT is taken on a PC at a test centre (not at home). It is shorter: TOPIK I IBT has 26 listening + 26 reading questions in 70 minutes, and TOPIK II IBT has 30 listening + 30 reading + 3 writing tasks in 125 minutes, with no break. It has the same validity as the paper test. See IBT score cut-offs.
Which one should I take?
- If you can handle everyday topics (shopping, transport, plans) but struggle with news or opinions, start with TOPIK I.
- If a university or job asks for level 3 or higher, you need TOPIK II. TOPIK I cannot give level 3.
- A good check: if you score close to full marks on a TOPIK I mock test, move up to TOPIK II.
Not sure? Try a free TOPIK I mock test first. It takes 100 minutes and shows an estimated level.
